Thomas Tuchel named England’s 26-man World Cup squad on Friday morning, leaving out Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July. Before the announcement, Maguire confirmed his omission and said in a post that he was shocked and devastated.

Tuchel has moved away from several pillars of Gareth Southgate’s tenure, with Foden and Palmer both involved during the run to the Euro 2024 final. Alexander-Arnold has never fully established himself since his international debut in 2018.

There is still elite talent in the group, including Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford. England have not lifted the World Cup since 1966.

The 26 also features Ivan Toney, Jarell Quansah, Ollie Watkins, Jordan Henderson and Noni Madueke, each coming off a campaign that was not entirely convincing.
