The Three Lions led in the second half through Anthony Gordon’s goal, but Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scored in the 85th and 92nd minutes to bring England’s fine World Cup to an end at the semi-final stage.

Dom Smith was at Atlanta Stadium to rate the England players’ performances…

Made good saves to deny two Argentina headers but beaten twice as Argentina came from behind to win.

Reece James 6

Not always reliable on the ball but defended well until he was forced to come off with another injury scare.

John Stones 8

Heroic defending from the free agent. Got his head to every cross he possibly could.

Marc Guehi 7

A fine defensive display from Guehi, who was composed on the ball and made plenty of clearances.

Another awesome display from Spence, this time at left-back. Added plenty in attack and

Elliot Anderson 8

An absolute animal in midfield, all over the pitch with tackles and clever passes despite picking up an early booking.

Declan Rice 6

Improved as the game wore on and had a chance to score as well.

Assisted England’s goal with an excellent cross for Gordon to score and found himself in some good positions, driving the ball forward.

Jude Bellingham 6

Plenty of nice runs with the ball down the line and tried to play England out of danger. Was up for the fight, as expected.

Anthony Gordon 8

Another excellent performance from the new Barcelona signing, who finished cutely to put England into the lead.

Harry Kane 7

Worked his socks off, particularly defensively, but it wasn’t to be yet again in an England shirt for the captain.

Subs:

Ezri Konsa (Gordon, 72’) 6

Some poor crosses when he came on and played on the right but did well.

Dan Burn (Rice, 83’) N/A

Marcus Rashford (Spence, 90+6’) N/A
