England laboured to a 0-0 draw with Ghana in Boston, the spark from the Croatia win gone. According to Sunderland Echo, composure and creativity were missing.

Declan Rice said there was no need to be negative or downbeat, accepting group-stage stumbles happen, yet this display against a struggling Ghana offered little encouragement.

Jordan Pickford, 5/10, misjudged a through ball in a collision with Prince Kwabena Adu outside the box, the referee waved play on. Changes followed, Bukayo Saka replaced Anthony Gordon on 65 minutes, Nico O’Reilly arrived for Djed Spence on 66.

Reece James improved delivery and England finally threatened, O’Reilly headed his cross onto the bar and Saka forced Benjamin Asare into his best save. In stoppage time, Eberechi Eze played the ball back across from a corner, finding Marc Guéhi for a looping header.

Guéhi, 8/10, was outstanding, winning 12 of 14 ground and aerial duels, he surely will not be back on the bench against Panama. Ezri Konsa, 4/10, was uncertain and fortunate not to concede a penalty for a clumsy lunge.

Harry Kane, 4/10, was largely anonymous and skewed England’s best chance. Rice, 6/10, was solid, creating six set-piece openings. Spence and James 6, Elliot Anderson 6, Bellingham 5, Noni Madueke 5, Gordon 5, Saka 7, O’Reilly 7.

Morgan Rogers, Eze and Marcus Rashford, all 5/10, made little impact, the trio produced no shots and one chance created. The turgid showing may give Thomas Tuchel reasons to rethink selections for Panama, with the knock-outs still within reach.
