A trio of the Three Lions’ five goals in Belgrade rout were particularly special - and all for the same reason
Noni Madueke and Marc Guehi were both delighted to score their first senior international goals for England against Serbia.
Madueke and Guehi were among three players to net for the Three Lions for the first time in Tuesday night’s 5-0 rout in Belgrade, along with Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa. Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford were also on target.
Arsenal winger Madueke scored England’s second goal of the game at the Rajko Mitic Stadium quickly after Kane’s opening header, racing clear from well outside the Serbia box after a fine flick from Morgan Rogers before dinking the ball over goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
“Delighted for the team performance, for the win. I think it was a really, really top performance today,” Madueke told ITV afterwards. “Thank God that I was able to score my first goal. It was just a top day overall.
“It was a great flick from Morgan and, as soon as it broke for me, I had one thought in my head, which was to go as fast as I could to the goal, and then compose myself for the finish.
“I am really happy. It’s a great feeling, of course. It is something you work for and dream of when you are a lot younger. For it to come to fruition today is a great feeling.”
Guehi, meanwhile, said he was “over the moon” to finally score his own first goal for England.
The Crystal Palace captain opened his international account by converting a Declan Rice free-kick with a close-range sliding effort through Petrovic’s legs after Konsa had made it three shortly after the break.
Rashford finished off the scoring with a late penalty after fellow substitute Ollie Watkins was fouled by Strahinja Erakovic, with Nikola Milenkovic sent off for Serbia after a foul on Kane. Watkins also had a goal ruled out for offside.
Guehi made his England debut back in March 2022 and was a pivotal player as they reached the final of Euro 2024 last summer, but had yet to find the net in 24 previous caps.
“It’s been great,” he said of England’s September camp under Thomas Tuchel, which also included Saturday’s 2-0 win over Andorra.
“It’s always easy coming here [to England camp]. We’ve got such a good group of players and a good group of staff.
“We’re all working towards one goal, so it’s been really enjoyable. Always good to be here.”
Guehi said of his maiden England goal: “I’m just over the moon. It’s a fantastic feeling. You work really hard growing up, so to score a goal for your country is the best feeling.”
England were worthy winners in Belgrade, in what was their best performance under Tuchel to date.
They are now in a commanding position in their World Cup qualification group with just three games left to play.
England are seven points clear of Albania in second place, with their next qualifier a trip to Latvia in October, which follows a home friendly against Wales.
