England will bid for their second successive continental title when they take on Spain in the 2025 Women’s European Championship final on Sunday evening.
The Lionesses left it late to beat Italy in the semi-final. They trailed by a goal before Michelle Agyemang scored in second-half stoppage time, and Chloe Kelly grabbed the winner in extra time.
Spain secured their berth in the final late in the semi-final clash against Germany, courtesy of Aitana Bonmati’s strike in the second half of extra time.
This fixture is a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, where Spain triumphed by a solitary goal.
Spain are unbeaten in the competition and rank first for goals scored (17) and goals conceded (three).The Lionesses are the defending champions, and head coach Sarina Wiegman has never lost in her two previous appearances in the competition’s final.They have been defensively vulnerable, conceding six goals, but have one of the best attacks. They rank second for goals scored (15) and have created more chances (27) than any other team.Spain are expected to dominate this fixture, but that may not stop England from creating chances.
The Lionesses are sweating over the fitness of Chelsea’s Lauren James, who was substituted at the start of the second half against Italy.Defender Laia Aleixandri could return to the starting line-up for La Roja after serving a one-match ban against Germany.
Ella Toone: The Manchester United midfielder has registered two goals and two assists to rank joint-first alongside Alessia Russo for goal contributions for the Lionesses.
Beth Mead: Despite not being a regular in the starting line-up, the Arsenal forward has three goal involvements – the second highest for England.
Alexia Putellas: The two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner has been in a rich vein of form, providing seven goal involvements – the most of any player.
Esther Gonzalez: The 32-year-old striker is the competition’s top scorer with four goals. She is one of La Roja’s best players.
