Enrique Riquelme’s Real Madrid presidential bid is receding after he was unable to obtain the financial guarantees required by the club’s statutes. According to Glorioso 1904, several Spanish banks, including Santander, have refused to provide the necessary backing.
Without that mandatory support, he is unlikely to file his list before the deadline on Saturday, 23 May. That could see Florentino Pérez automatically re-elected on Sunday.
Such an outcome would directly aid José Mourinho, as Pérez remains focused on bringing the Portuguese coach back to the Santiago Bernabéu. A Riquelme candidacy could have delayed the Benfica coach’s arrival.
Had the 37-year-old’s bid been accepted and a vote set for seven June, major decisions, including the choice of the next coach, would have been put on hold. Pérez would have stayed in post until the ballot, but without scope to conclude key dossiers.
With Spanish banks declining to back Riquelme, the most likely scenario now points to Pérez continuing as president and, consequently, negotiations advancing over Mourinho’s return to the club.
