Reflecting on his high-profile move to English football, Enzo Fernández has peeled back the curtain on the chaotic negotiations that defined the winter of 2023. The midfielder's record-breaking transfer from Benfica to Chelsea was a saga that remained uncertain until the final moments.

In a revealing conversation, Fernández described the entire period as a whirlwind. He recounted a relentless rollercoaster of developments where the situation evolved daily, with the outcome hanging in the balance right up to the transfer deadline.

“That's how it was until the end of the month, uh, so nothing, it ended up happening on the last day of the market, a very high-value transfer and well, I think it was as it was and I tried to obviously enjoy it in the last few weeks. If it happened, great, and if it didn't, in the end I was at a club like Benfica that gave me everything, but it was crazy. It finally happened,”

Fernández said, encapsulating the frenzy of that time.

The protracted deal was ultimately sealed on the last day of the January window—January 31, 2023—culminating in Fernández putting pen to paper on an eight-year contract with the London club for a staggering fee of €121 million.
