Before kick off tonight, the big news breaking was that defender Wesley Fofana was not in the squad.

The centre-back, only just getting up to speed from his last issue, was mysteriously absent from the squad.

Levi Colwill was bound to play – he’s featured in every game where he’s been available in the Premier League this season – the question was who would partner him. In the end, Trevoh Chalobah got the nod ahead of Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Academy produced pair Chalobah and Colwill were up against fellow Cobham graduate Dominic Solanke, and they did a superb job. Solanke finished the game with just 21 touches, the fewest of any player who started the game. Considering he’s a player who likes to drop deep and get involved, that’s really impressive.

The defensive pair were really solid. Amazingly, they had 0 tackles and 0 interceptions between them according to WhoScored, showing how in control the Blues were in this game. That’s also in part thanks to Moises Caicedo, who was a wall in front of him. He had 4 tackles on his own.

So while we await more news about Fofana, we’re pretty sure Enzo Maresca will be delighted with this pairing, and they’re surely in line to feature again on Sunday when we play Brentford. Constant injuries have made it hard to pick the same back line consistently this season – now Maresca has the chance, he surely has to take it.
