Nigeria national team head coach Eric Chelle has spoken out about Wilfred Ndidi's absence for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final showdown against hosts Morocco on Wednesday, 14 January.

The 29-year-old midfield dynamo picked up two yellow cards during the knockout rounds against Mozambique and Algeria respectively, meaning he will sit out the crucial clash with the Atlas Lions due to suspension.

Addressing questions about Ndidi's suspension, the French-Malian coach admitted that losing his skipper is a major setback for the team, but he expressed faith in the squad's depth to fill the gap.

“I'm disappointed for him because he gives so much to the team, but we are a group. There are some really good players who are waiting for their opportunity to show what they can bring,” Chelle stated during the pre-match press conference.

"So, I'm very confident about that [dealing with Ndidi's absence]. I just have to choose between some players and everything will be fine."

On the suggestion that Morocco are the Super Eagles’ first real test at this AFCON, Chelle dismissed the notion, insisting that every game at this level is high stakes.

“Algeria was the biggest test, Morocco is the biggest test—every match is the biggest test for this team because expectations are so high. We are ready for this game, for all the games we play in this tournament,” he added.

"We approach every match like it’s our last, and we always give everything. Now, I have to assess my players physically because we played just two days ago, so rest is important. After that, I’ll evaluate the team and then we can focus on the game plan."

The winner between Nigeria and Morocco will go head-to-head with either seven-time record African champions Egypt or Senegal in the final.
