Manchester City claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
The hosts carved out the opening chance just four minutes in, as Jadon Anthony wriggled his way into the area and aimed for the bottom corner, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was equal to it.
At the other end, Martin Dubravka was also forced into a sharp stop, getting a fingertip to Rayan Cherki’s strike to push it onto the crossbar.
However, a minute later, Erling Haaland opened the scoring after he was found by Jeremy Doku before dinking a composed finish beyond Dubravka.
Moments later, Zian Flemming could’ve restored parity for the Clarets, but he dragged his effort wide.
At the other end, City almost had a second when Nico O’Reilly met Rayan Ait-Nouri’s corner, but Dubravka was equal to it and was called into action again to repel his long-range effort.
Just before the break, Ait-Nouri was the next to test Dubravka, but his strike was comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper.
Five minutes after the restart, Antoine Semenyo went close to doubling the visitors’ advantage, but he sliced his effort over the bar before Haaland struck the post from the edge of the area.
On the hour mark, the Citizens threatened again as Doku tried his luck from distance, but his effort sailed well over the bar before Dubravka kept out Savinho’s effort with his outstretched leg.
Moments later, Bernardo Silva teed Nico Gonzalez up to strike from distance, but his effort nestled just wide.
On the stroke of full-time, O’Reilly squandered a glorious opportunity to seal the victory for City after he got onto Cherki’s inviting cross, but he couldn’t hit the target.
The result sees Manchester City leapfrog Arsenal into top spot and confirms Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.
