Marcus Rashford faces a hugely uncertain future following the culmination of his loan spell with Aston Villa.

As things stand, he will return to Carrington in July to begin preparing for the 2025/2026 campaign, as per ESPN. It remains to be seen if Ruben Amorim will include the forward on Manchester United’s pre-season tour, given Rashford is unlikely to play a part in his plans next season.

From United’s point of view, they’d have preferred to have Villa activate their £40 million buy option to receive a healthy cash injection at the start of the summer. However, the player — hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Unai Emery — would’ve also had to green-light the move, and it seems as though he’s had his heart set on a new venture entirely.

Numerous outlets have claimed that Barcelona has always been viewed as Rashford’s dream move if he were ever made to depart United. Talks were held over a potential switch back in January, but the side’s precarious financial situation meant there was no way to register him on their squad list unless outgoings were sanctioned.

Last month, Rashford’s agent met with Barcelona chief Deco to discuss the details of a prospective transfer, though the situation subsequently fell quiet. The La Liga champions then prioritised targets Luis Diaz and Nico Williams, having a bid rejected for the former and reaching an agreement on personal terms with the latter.

Assuming Williams’ Blaugrana move materialises in the coming days, there is little to no room for the outcast Red to join Hansi Flick’s ranks — especially not for the fee United are demanding.

Who else is interested in Rashford?

ESPN’s report adds that Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus and various Premier League outfits have all registered their interest in the 27-year-old, though INEOS are yet to have any formal bids arrive in their inbox.

The United graduate is tied to Old Trafford until 2028, having signed a lucrative five-year deal in the aftermath of his career-best campaign in 2022/2023.
