Mexico is weighing a bid to stage the 2029 Club World Cup, with Estadio Azteca set to host the opening match and the final if the country is selected.
According to Americayya.net, president Claudia Sheinbaum said they are considering hosting the 32-club tournament, which is styled on the World Cup.
She added that nothing is confirmed and any decision would depend on whether it makes financial sense for the country, so the plan will be analysed first.
Estadio Azteca, home of Club América, was widely lauded during the current World Cup, staging five Mexico matches and one featuring Colombia. Many questioned why the historic venue did not get the final.
Should Mexico become hosts, Azteca would be the choice for both the curtain-raiser and the showpiece. Hosting could also open the door for América to receive an invitation, as they have yet to qualify and need to win the Concacaf Champions Cup.
