Macclesfield forward Ethan McLeod, 21, has died in a car crash while travelling home from an away match.
The club said in a statement the incident happened on the M1 as he returned from Bedford Town on Tuesday night, 16 December.
The announcement came after the National League North fixture. Macclesfield described McLeod as a talented, popular member of the first-team squad.
A former Wolves youngster, McLeod joined the Silkmen in the summer after a successful trial. He had been with Wolves since the age of seven, signed professional terms, and left the club in September 2024.
Wolves will observe a minute's silence before Saturday’s Premier League match against Brentford to honour him. His younger brother Conor is in the club’s under-21 squad.
The Professional Footballers’ Association also expressed condolences to McLeod’s family, friends and team-mates.
