Ethan Moore’s hopes of a permanent move to Gateshead have been thrown into doubt as uncertainty grows over manager Rob Elliot’s position at the National League club.

Sunderland Echo understands the 21-year-old forward had been lined up for a switch to the International Stadium after a promising loan, which ended on the final day of the league season when he scored his first senior goal in a defeat at Altrincham before returning to Sunderland.

He is expected to leave the Black Cats when his contract expires this summer, and there had been an expectation he would sign for Gateshead after Elliot said he wanted to secure the player’s long-term future.

In April, the former Newcastle United goalkeeper said Moore was still learning and getting his fitness back, adding he impressed against Carlisle despite limited sharpness. He called him driven and emotionally invested, sometimes grumpy when not playing but respectful, and said he hoped to sign him for the future because he is a pleasure to coach with major potential.

Those plans could now be paused, with Elliot believed to be close to stepping down after struggling to agree a plan to move the club forward on and off the pitch during recent meetings.
