The move signals another landmark moment for the blue side of Manchester, with the Etihad Stadium set to take centre stage during one of the biggest football events in the world.

It also comes as the stadium edges closer to completing its extensive redevelopment project, in a transformation designed to elevate the venue into one of Europe’s premier football destinations.

Construction, which began in 2023, will deliver a major overhaul of the North Stand and surrounding campus in a project worth around £300 million and due to become actively used midway through the ongoing club season.

The work will lift capacity to over 61,000 seats, driven by a sizeable third–tier extension providing close to 8,000 new seats. A premium Skybar overlooking the pitch and accommodating more than 400 guests will crown the stand, linking to a new on-site hotel.

Supporters can also look forward to an enhanced matchday experience through a state-of-the-art fan park capable of hosting up to 6,000 fans under a covered entertainment space, ensuring the Etihad campus becomes a vibrant destination year-round – not just on matchdays.

According to the information of MailSport’s Mike Keegan, England’s group match away from Wembley Stadium at the 2028 European Championship – should they qualify – will be held at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium.

The home of Pep Guardiola’s side has seemingly been chosen ahead of considerations for all of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United’s respective stadiums.

Should England progress to the round-of-16, they would also play another match away from the national stadium, and with a full schedule to be announced next week, City’s home will be confirmed as England’s ‘second home’ for the group stage.

Euro 2028 will be jointly hosted across the UK and Ireland between June 9 and July 9, offering a first major home tournament for England since Euro 96. With the Three Lions eager to put right recent near-misses on the international stage, Manchester is set to play a crucial role in the nation’s journey.

Looking ahead, the tournament will also give Manchester City a global platform to showcase their modernised campus and booming footprint.

From world-class training facilities to the enhanced stadium and hospitality spaces, the Etihad Stadium is preparing to welcome both domestic fans and travelling supporters with facilities befitting the world’s elite football stage.
