Megan Finnigan suffers ACL injury

Everton have been without their captain to start the season with Megan Finnigan sidelined in January.

After months of speculation, it has now been confirmed that Finnigan will require surgery to repair her anterior cruciate knee ligament.

The Toffees captain will be out until at least 2026, the club has announced.

Last season Everton’s skipper played 12 WSL games, featuring in every match up until she suffered her heartbreaking injury in January.

The initial assessment on her injury suggested that Finnigan would recover on her own terms. After such a delayed process though, the player has decided to undergo surgery that could end her season before it even began.

Having been injured in January, the 26-year-old is still yet to play at Goodison Park since the team made it their permanent home.

Knee injuries haunt Everton

Whilst the unfortunate loss of their captain is painful, it is made even worse considering the Toffees’ luck this season.

Finnigan is now the fourth Everton player to suffer a knee injury in the past season alone.

The captain joins teammates Courtney Brosnan, Aurora Galli and new signing Rion Ishikawa on the sideline with similar injuries.

Injuries have slowed down the club to start their season despite a fast start with a dominant win against local rivals Liverpool.

Three losses in a row have seen Everton drop down to ninth in the table and they are now fighting a relegation battle just five games into the campaign.

Issy Hobson was recently recalled from her loan at Nottingham Forest as defensive cover for all of Everton’s injury struggles.

Next up for Everton in the WSL is a tricky clash against high-flying Manchester United.
