Everton are aiming to secure a loan deal for Jack Grealish (h/t the Independent).
Serie A champions Napoli showed interest, but Everton are now in the race and have an advantage in the battle for Grealish.
The England international reportedly wants to stay in the north, and joining the Toffees will allow him to stay in Cheshire.
Manager David Moyes admitted Everton need new additions after losing 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series.
The Toffees recruited Thierno Barry and Mark Travers, with Adam Aznou on the way from Bayern Munich, but the squad need new wingers.
After failing with a move for Malick Fofana, Everton are now eyeing a deal for Grealish, who has endured a torrid time at the Etihad Stadium.
City boss Pep Guardiola dropped him for crucial games last season, making it clear to the playmaker that he is surplus to requirements.
His tenure with the FA Cup finalists has been torrid, bagging only 17 goals and 23 assists following his £100 million move from Aston Villa.
Everton must steer clear of Grealish. Even on loan, the cost would be exorbitant.
His hefty loan fee and sky-high wages make little financial sense for a club still navigating budgetary constraints.
More importantly, Grealish’s output has nosedived.
He tallied just three goals and five assists in 32 appearances last season. Everton need better returns from their attackers.
Once hailed as an ‘outstanding talent’, he is now 29 and no longer brings the energy or explosiveness the team desperately craves.
Moyes needs a hungry, in-form winger with pace, sharpness, and end product, not a high-profile player coasting on reputation.
