Goodison Park chiefs have made an unexpected move in the transfer market. Reports from Spain suggest a formal enquiry has gone in for Ørjan Nyland. The 35-year-old Norwegian international is a free agent, having seen his contract with Sevilla expire earlier this summer. He has suddenly become a hot commodity. A string of stellar displays during the recent international fixtures put him firmly back in the shop window. (Via Everton news feed on X)

Everton target emerges after stunning international tournament display

Everton need a reliable pair of hands. A proper number two to push Jordan Pickford and step in when the tough domestic schedule bites. Spanish outlet El Desmarque claims the Merseyside club have already reached out to the veteran’s representatives. The money on offer looks decent, but there is a major problem. Nyland wants to play. Sitting on the bench every week might not appeal to a keeper who just reminded everyone what he can do on the big stage.

Clubs in Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are also interested. They can offer him regular minutes, something David Moyes cannot guarantee at Goodison. It represents a clear shift in tactical thinking from the Everton board. They want instant reliability without spending a fortune.

Looking at the numbers from his time in La Liga last season, Nyland acted as a backup option for Sevilla, making five appearances and playing 450 minutes. He conceded five goals, racked up 10 saves, stopped a penalty, and recorded a 66.7 per cent save percentage. Safe stuff. But it was his recent international form for Norway that really caught the eye. He looked sharp, commanded his box, and dealt with aerial crosses effortlessly. His distribution from the back remains excellent.

Paying a massive fee for a backup keeper makes no sense when the transfer budget is this tight. A free agent allows the recruitment team to keep their cash for weak outfield positions.

If Nyland refuses to accept a secondary role, the recruitment team must pivot quickly. Younger options like Mark Travers are out there. Everton simply require an individual content with sitting on the bench and providing dressing room leadership. They need this sorted before pre-season training camps begin.
