Everton thrash Liverpool 4-1 and Manchester United hit four past Leicester in their opening Women’s Super League fixtures of the season.

Ornella Vignola scored a hat-trick on her WSL debut in the Merseyside derby becoming the first Everton men’s or women’s player to score a hat-trick against Liverpool since Dixie Dean in 1931.

The Reds opened the scoring through Cornelia Kapocs early on in Gareth Taylor’s first match as Liverpool manager, but the lead would not last long.

In fact, 12 minutes was all it took for Everton to equalise through Vignolla. The 20-year-old was signed from Granada this summer and was one of six Everton debutants that started the match.

Katja Snoeijs then put the Toffees in front just before the break before Vignola scored twice in two minutes to complete her hat trick and seal the win. The victory was Everton’s fifth win in-a-row at Anfield.

United were also in fine form in their first game of the new season as they beat Leicester 4-0.

Marc Skinner’s side have already been in action this season in the Champions League qualifiers beating both PSV Eindhoven and Hammarby so far.

Lioness star Ella Toone opened the scoring for the Red Devils shortly before Elisabeth Terland doubled their lead with a header.

Melvine Malard’s two late goals made it four and put United in a great position ahead of Thursday’s crucial Champions League qualifier with Norwegian side SK Brann.

Meanwhile, Tottenham finished 11th in the WSL last season but a late Bethany England penalty against West Ham ensured new manager Martin Ho started this season with three points.

The game was a stalemate until the 86th minute when Katrina Gorry brought down Evelina Summanen in the area. The Spurs captain coolly converted.

Brighton and Aston Villa proved to be the only WSL match so far without a goal as they drew 0-0.
