Welcome to the Everton v Newcastle preview.
Saturday 29th November – A 5.30pm kick-off.
Newcastle United will be hoping to put the disappointment of a midweek European defeat behind them on Saturday evening when making their first ever trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium to do battle with Everton in yet another live televised fixture. The last league match saw a phenomenal and wildly-celebrated victory over Manchester City but the Toon will be mindful of the fact that they are yet to win an away match in the league all season. Six matches have seen the travelling Toon Army endure three goalless draws and three poor defeats in a run that threatens to derail any progress as we look to climb out of the bottom half of the table.
The last six league matches have seen Newcastle win three and lose three. Our victories have come at home against Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Man City, whereas defeats have come away at Brighton, West Ham and Brentford. We’ve scored nine goals in this sequence and conceded ten. The nine points gained has us in fourteenth place but a win coupled with every single result going our way could see us as high as ninth on goal difference.
Everton have won three, drawn one and lost two of their past six league matches. Wins have come over Crystal Palace, Fulham and Man United, whereas they’ve drawn with the Mackems and lost to Spurs and Man City. They’ve scored six goals and conceded seven. The ten points gained has them eleventh in the league, unbelievably just three points off fourth.
Last time out
The Toon travelled to Olympique Marseille on Tuesday night to do battle in the intimidating Velodrome. We almost took the lead in the opening three minutes when Malick Thiaw saw his header cleared off the line. We didn’t have to wait long for the opener however, as great work from Sandro Tonali led to Harvey Barnes burying a chance soon after to send the travelling fans into delirium. The rest of the half saw Marseille on the front foot but United looked dangerous on the break as we took our one goal advantage into halftime. The scene could well have been set for a famous victory had we managed to shut up shop and keep things tight at the start of the second half in order to preserve our lead. Unfortunately, two quickfire goals for Marseille deflated United and we never really looked likely to achieve a crucial equaliser.
Everton travelled to Man United on Monday night and found themselves down to ten men early on when Gueye was sent off for slapping a member of his own team! Despite this, they opened the scoring soon after and were able to hang on for a very valuable 1-0 victory.
-Newcastle will be making their first ever appearance at the Hill Dickinson Stadium which will become the sixty-first venue to host NUFC in the Premier League.
-Everton have lost just one league match in their new stadium, a 3-0 defeat to Spurs at the end of October.
– The Toon have won two and drawn three of their last seven visits to Everton.
Memorable match
Sir Bobby Robson worked his magic on the Toon in 01/02, taking us from mid-table underachievers to title challengers. We went to Goodison Park at the end of October having already beaten Middlesbrough and Bolton on our travels as well as picking up a point at Stamford Bridge. On this occasion Sir Bobby decided we should rein in our attacking instincts, soak up pressure on the back foot and look to hit Everton on the counter with devastating results. The match was almost twenty minutes old when Craig Bellamy chased after a long ball, panicking the Everton defence into an horrendous error when defender and goalkeeper clattered into each other, leaving our striker with the simple task of walking the ball into an empty net. Everton spent the rest of half desperately pushing for an equaliser without success. If they were scratching their heads at being behind at the break, even worse to come. The second half was just four minutes old when Alan Shearer sent a low cross into the box for Nobby Solano to score a rare headed goal and double United’s advantage. This was the cue for further attacking dominance from the Toffees who pulled one back soon after with a well-taken effort. With the score now at 2-1 and with thirty-nine minutes left to play, Everton must have felt they were more than capable of achieving at least a point. Thankfully, stout defending from the Toon kept them at bay and another lightning-quick counter attack saw Robert put a chance on a plate for Acuna to finish from close range and complete the scoring.
This wasn’t the prettiest performance of Sir Bobby’s reign but three points, three goals and a place in the top six were all reasons to celebrate long into the night. Everton 1-3 Newcastle
Played for both
Gary Speed was a lifelong Everton fan and signed for the Toffees from Leeds in 1996, scoring on his debut against the Toon in a 2-0 win that put a dampener on Alan Shearer’s first start for the black and whites. The attack-minded midfielder made fifty-eight appearances in two years at Goodison, scoring sixteen goals, before signing for Kenny Dalglish in February 1998. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win over Barnsley in the FA Cup quarter-final as we marched towards a Wembley final. He spent six years with Newcastle, playing under three different managers and making three separate appearances for the Toon at the old Wembley stadium. Highlights of his time at NUFC include scoring the winning goal in a UEFA Cup quarter-final against PSV, an absolutely belting volley in a win against Bradford and a headed equaliser in a crucial Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev. A true modern-day legend.
Tragically, this week marked fourteen years since Gary Speed took his own life. If you or anyone you know is struggling then please call the Samaritans for free on 116 123. You are not alone.
Andros Townsend played briefly for NUFC in the second half of our ill-fated 15/16 season. Signed by Steve McClaren, he played thirteen times and scored four goals. He is best remembered for a brilliant free-kick that secured a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on a day when Karl Darlow saved a penalty and Rafa Benitez came desperately close to masterminding a great escape from relegation. He left the Toon at the end of the season and spent five years at Crystal Palace before signing for Everton in 2021. He played twenty-one times for the blues, scoring three goals.
Salomon Rondon was loaned by Rafa Benitez from West Brom in a swap deal that saw Dwight Gayle loaned the other way. He scored an impressive eleven goals in thirty-two appearances in his one season in black and white and was named our player of the season. After a spell abroad, he signed for Everton in 2021 (linking up with Rafa Benitez) but struggled for form and only managed one league goal in twenty-seven appearances.
Managers
Eddie Howe after a 2-1 defeat away at Marseille in the Champions League:
“I thought the effort was good. I think the start of the second half, obviously, was a big one for us – 15 minutes at the start of the second half, I thought, cost us. I thought we handled the atmosphere really well in the first half and even towards the end of the game, I felt there were chances for us to score. I think the goal straight away, near enough, after half-time, changes the whole feeling around the stadium and the game itself. It was just a lapse of concentration from our perspective, I think. Then we didn’t maybe react well enough to that. We conceded the second and from there it was difficult.”
David Moyes after a 1-0 Premier League win away at Man United:
“I like my players fighting each other, if someone didn’t do the right action. If you want that toughness and resilience to get a result, you want someone to act on it. If nothing happened [no red card], I don’t think anyone in the stadium would have been surprised. I thought the referee could have taken a bit longer to think about it. I was told that by the rules of the game that if you slap your own player, you could be in trouble. I’m disappointed we got the sending off. But we’ve all been footballers, we get angry with our teammates. He’s apologised for the sending off, he’s praised the players and thanked them for it and apologised.”
