Everton head coach Brian Sorensen has confirmed that two key players will miss tonight’s League Cup clash with Man City.
The clash between the two sides kicks off at 7pm BST, in a group that also includes Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday afternoon, he discussed injuries in his squad and his hopes for a competitive performance against the visitors.
Ahead of Man City vs Everton, Toffees boss Sorensen confirmed that goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan will be unavailable for the League Cup clash after suffering a knee injury.
Forward Kelly Gago will also miss the match as she continues to follow concussion protocols.
Both absences leave room for other players to step forward and impress on a big stage.
Sorensen acknowledged that Everton’s recent form has been below expectations but emphasised that the group is still developing. He spoke about the importance of building connections on the pitch and hinted that several players who have not featured regularly could be involved.
“We are still building gelling and working on the relationships within the squad,” Sorensen explained. “Some of the ones that maybe have not played as much will feature and get a run out. It is a big opportunity for them. I hope they take it.”
Despite their current run Sorensen pointed to Everton’s strong record against Manchester City last season when his side took four points from two league meetings including a memorable home victory. “Hopefully we can make it an even game tomorrow,” he said.
Head coach Andree Jeglertz revealed that winger Hemp will not feature after sustaining an ankle injury during City’s 5-1 win over Tottenham in the Women’s Super League. Hemp left the pitch in the first half after an awkward collision and was later seen wearing a protective boot.
Jeglertz explained that City are awaiting scan results to determine the severity of the problem.
“We do not know 100 percent yet,” he said. “It does not seem likely she will play.” Hemp has previously endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury and her absence will be a significant loss for City.
Both managers see tonight’s tie as an opportunity to test their squads. Everton will hope to regain confidence and build on their positive record against City while the visitors aim to maintain momentum after their recent league victory. With important players missing on both sides the League Cup clash promises to be an intriguing and closely fought encounter at Manchester City Joie Stadium.
