Sunderland’s squad could be well represented at the World Cup in North America after qualifying concluded on Tuesday, Sunderland Echo notes. The 48-nation finals line-up is now set.
Italy lost on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina after beating Northern Ireland, including Trai Hume and Dan Ballard, in the semi-final.
Lutsharel Geertruida made three qualifying appearances and his versatility should make him hard to overlook. Leaving him out now would be a shock.
Morocco were perfect in qualifying. Chemsdine Talbi saw only 13 minutes then added four caps since, which keeps him firmly in contention.
The Netherlands still lack a convincing No nine. One goal in 10 caps and strong club form keep Brian Brobbey in the frame as a Plan B.
Nilson Angulo missed that meeting through injury, yet he has 12 caps and featured in Ecuador’s last four qualifiers. If fit, he will be there.
Omar Alderete anchors Paraguay and will start if fit. Wilson Isidor has switched to Haiti, earned two caps and hit a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Iceland, absolutely vital for Haiti’s first finals since 1974.
Habib Diarra has four in 18 caps and, with improving club form, will surely make Senegal’s squad.
Noah Sadiki played 73 minutes in the intercontinental play-off, with Arthur Masuaku also in DR Congo’s squad. Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland’s unbeaten qualifying run and played all but 14 minutes, and this could be his last World Cup.
