Benjamin Pavard only left Inter Milan to join Marseille on loan on deadline day due to the sale of Adrien Rabiot to AC Milan.
This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. They also report that Pavard could potentially return to Inter at the end of the season.
Defender Benjamin Pavard left Inter on the final day of the summer transfer window.
There had been transfer rumours surrounding the 29-year-old for a number of weeks. However, it was only right at the eleventh hour that he actually left.
According to FCInterNews, the opportunity for Pavard to join Marseille only really materialized right on deadline day.
This is because of the sale of midfielder Adrien Rabiot to AC Milan.
Marseille offloaded the former Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder due to a dressing room bust-up.
And by selling Rabiot to AC Milan, the Ligue 1 giants also got rid of the Frenchman’s high wages.
That left some space in Marseille’s wage bill. And this meant that they were able to accommodate Pavard’s high earnings.

According to FCIN, when Pavard and his representatives learned of the opportunity to join Marseille, they welcomed it.
The Frenchman was feeling a desire to return to his home country.
Furthermore, Marseille will still offer Pavard a chance to play in the Champions League. And he feels that it will be a good stage on which to show his qualities ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
Therefore, Pavard jumped at the chance to join Marseille.
Therefore, the French side signed the ex-Bayern Munich defender on loan. Inter, meanwhile, brought in Manuel Akanji on deadline day to replace Pavard.
As FCIN note, there is no guarantee that Pavard’s move to Marseille will end up being permanent.
The Ligue 1 club do have the option to sign Pavard outright next summer.
However, there is no guarantee that they will take it. Particularly in the event they want to devote the space in their wage bill to other signings next summer.
In that case, FCIN report, Pavard will happily return to Inter.
The 29-year-old had wanted to try his hand at a team in his native France. However, there weren’t necessarily hard feelings with Inter when he left.
Therefore, FCIN anticipate, if Marseille decline to exercise the purchase option, then Pavard has every chance of being an Inter player again in twelve months’ time.
