Yann Sommer will have to reprise the performance of Andre Onana in 2023 for Inter Milan against Man City this evening.

Inter take on Manchester City in their Champions League group stage opener knowing that they are facing perhaps the strongest team in all of Europe.

But the Nerazzurri have already been here before.

Inter came up against City in the final of the 2022-23 edition of the Champions League.

And the Cityzens did prevail on that occasion.

However, City were only able to win by a narrow 1-0 scoreline. And Inter went toe-to-toe with them, even having good chances to equalize late on.

Therefore, Inter will feel that if they can reprise their performance from that final, they will have every chance of taking a result from the Etihad that would be huge in the context of their early season.

Sommer Must Reprise Andre Onana Heroics For Inter Vs Man City

One key player for Inter’s performance against City the last time out was goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Cameroonian even won plaudits from City coach Pep Guardiola after the match.

Onana’s performance in that match was perhaps a big part of the reason why Manchester United decided to sign him last summer.

Inter went with veteran experience to replace the outgoing keeper. They signed Yann Sommer from Bayern Munich.

And the Nerazzurri have hardly missed a beat in goal, thus far.

Sommer more than played his part as Inter won the Serie A title last season.

However, the fact remains that Sommer is a very different player from Onana.

The Cameroonian is a player very much marked out by his confidence and technical ability with the ball at his feet.

That allowed Inter to withstand a fair bit of pressure from City.

Sommer is not really that same sort of keeper in possession. But he may have to prove that he has it in his locker if Inter are to execute the same gameplan they did the last time they faced City.
