Dan Burn will be out for four to six weeks after suffering a punctured lung and a rib issue in Newcastle’s derby at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

He collided with Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele, received treatment and tried to carry on, but he was in too much pain and was replaced by Fabian Schar soon after. According to TheArgus.co.uk, he was then taken to hospital for an overnight stay, with club medical staff monitoring his recovery.

Eddie Howe said Burn struggled to breathe at half-time and that the issue involves his ribs and lungs.

The former Brighton defender has been a key figure since returning to his native North East after a spell with the Seagulls.

He has helped his boyhood club to Carabao Cup glory and forced his way into the England team.
