Ex-Bundesliga referee Manuel Gräfe feels VAR officials were to blame for the penalty call which went against Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies in their 5-4 loss to PSG last night.

“Tough [call] for [head referee] Schärer with the pressure and on the monitor in detail to recognize so quickly,” Gräfe told BILD, refraining from placing blame on the Swiss arbiter.

"For me the main error lies with the VAR team, because it was at least not a crystal-clear wrong decision to let it continue on the pitch here.

“As such, the intervention was wrong in my view. But of course Schärer as referee is ultimately partly responsible for it,” Gräfe explained.

However, the 52-year-old did give the match officials some praise for correctly waving away other penalty appeals, and hoped the spot-kick against Davies won't ruin the two-legged tie.

“With Pavlovic earlier, they had rightly let a handball on a cross in front of the body continue. So it's bitter, and let's hope this penalty isn't ultimately decisive for this tie,” he added.
