Former Premier League and EFL defender Jonny Evans has decided to pursue a new career path - just months after retiring from football.

Throughout his career, the defender represented a number of teams in both the Premier League and Championship, such as Manchester United, Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland - although he only played 18 times in the second tier of English football and the rest of his time was spent in the top flight.

Evans achieved great success during his playing days, clinching four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and three EFL Cups, alongside the 2007 EFL Championship title with Sunderland. He also made over 100 appearances for the Northern Irish national team, captaining the country on a number of occasions.

He hung up his boots June 2025, after spending the last few years of his career playing consistently in the Premier League for Manchester United. It first appeared that the 37-year-old would stay involved with United, but that no longer appears to be the case.

After retiring, Evans stayed with the Red Devils as their loan manager, overseeing the temporary moves of players such as Harry Amass, Toby Collyer and Radek Vitek to Championship clubs.

However, after just a number of months, the former centre-back has left that role behind to move to pastures new.

As per journalist Alan Nixon’s Patreon channel, Evans is now poised to become a football agent.

The Northern Irishman is set to combine with fellow countryman Colin Murdock - a former EFL player himself for the likes of Preston North End and who also came through the Man United system - and who is well-versed in the world of business, having established the Murdock Sports Group in 2011.

Nixon states that due to Evans’ knowledge of United’s youth prospects, he could be a hit in the agency scene.

Jonny Evans decision could affect some of Manchester United’s loanees

Now that Evans has left his role of loan manager at Manchester United behind, a number of players and clubs could be seriously impacted.

The 37-year-old was in control of where players such as Amass spent their temporary spells away from United, but now somebody else will be in charge of those decisions, which could change everything.

If Evans’ successor decides that certain loanees need a change of scenery, it could affect a number of EFL Championship clubs. Sheffield Wednesday are the most likely candidates in this scenario, as Amass’ deal at Hillsborough is set to expire in January.

There has been much talk in recent times about whether the 18-year-old will remain with the Owls throughout the second half of the season. Due to the fact that Evans decided moving to Wednesday was worthwhile to start with, there was hope that his mindset wouldn’t have changed.
