The Owls are likely to be limited in their recruitment for the foreseeable future, due to the restrictions placed upon them during Dejphon Chansiri’s reign as owner.

Wednesday have already felt the full force of that this season, with loan deals for Harry Amass and Ethan Horvath the entirety of their summer business.

Key operators such as Josh Windass, Djeidi Gassama and Michael Smith all walked out of the doors at Hillsborough without being suitably replaced, which has led to an over-reliance on youth products to fill the void, ultimately leading to lacklustre performances on the pitch.

Former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper was brought in on a free after Wednesday were placed into administration, with it now reported that the Steel City side have been given permission to add another player to their squad.

With out-of-contract players such as Nathan Redmond spotted training with Wednesday in recent weeks, it is clear that the Owls have a number of options to choose from when selecting who to sign next to start their rebuild.

With this in mind, one of their former operators, Jaden Brown, has hinted at a return to Hillsborough via social media when replying to a supporter’s post.

When asked to comeback to the Steel City side, Brown replied: “I’d love for it to happen bro. Gods at the wheel. Nothing I can control.”

The 26-year-old played 32 times for the Owls between 2021 and 2023, scoring twice and helping them achieve promotion up to the Championship.

He has been out of contract since November 2024, after being let go by Scottish outfit St. Mirren just months after signing for the club.

Sheffield Wednesday could provide Jaden Brown with a route back into football

The past few years haven’t been the smoothest ride for Brown, as it was confirmed during his time at St. Mirren that the club were conducting an internal investigation after Brown pleaded guilty to three driving offences.

This can’t have helped his cause when it comes to finding a new club, but Wednesday could offer their former player a lifeline.

It almost guaranteed that the Owls will be operating out of League One next term and with a restriction preventing them from paying transfer fees, signing free agents will be one of the only ways they can build a squad.

Brown has prior experience of achieving promotion out of the third-tier with Wednesday and with a seemingly large desire to pursue a move back to Hillsborough, the Steel City side could view him as a potential option next term.
