Martin Bain has emerged as the most likely candidate for the Blackburn Rovers chief executive job.

Steve Waggott vacated the role at the end of May after seven years at Ewood Park, having previously worked at Coventry City, Charlton Athletic and Gillingham.

Rovers missed out on the play-offs by two points last season, under Valerien Ismael’s management following John Eustace’s departure in February.

Blackburn are looking to address their vacant chief executive sooner rather than later, as the summer progresses.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, Bain is emerging as a leading option for the job.

The 57-year-old was previously chief executive at Rangers and Sunderland, infamously featuring in the latter’s fly-on-the-wall documentary.

He was also the CEO of FSDL, the organising company of the Indian Super League, which the Venky’s have noted positively.

Bain hasn’t been involved with English football since his spell with the Black Cats, which came during their disastrous double relegation years.

However, he reportedly could be tempted to return by the Blackburn role.

His spell with Rangers was a more successful period, winning four league titles and six domestic honours during his time as the Scottish giants’ CEO.

Blackburn Rovers must get chief executive appointment right

Blackburn Rovers are a club that have been sorely mistreated over the last decade and are seeking clarity and communication with those leading their club.

Although the East Lancashire outfit finished just two points outside the play-offs, there was still a negative sentiment surrounding the club as the season reached its latter stages.

This may have partly been down to the side’s inconsistent form under Ismael but is more likely the 15 years of ill-feeling towards the Venky’s naturally pouring out.

If Bain is appointed, he must try and immediately work on mending the damaged relationship between Rovers’ supporters and the club.

Waggott became incredibly unpopular by the end of his time as the club’s chief executive and Bain must avoid the same situation if he decides to take over the vacant position at Ewood Park.

Rovers are a club brimming with potential and must get this appointment right to move back in the right direction as a football club.
