According to Sunderland Echo, former Sunderland pair Duncan Watmore and Pierre Ekwah made deadline day moves on Monday, to Rotherham United and Watford respectively.
Watmore, 31, has signed a short-term deal with League One Rotherham that runs until the end of the season. He left Millwall in the summer and was a free agent for the first half of the campaign. He made 87 Sunderland appearances between 2013 and 2020.
Boss Matt Hamshaw recently said the Millers were being proactive and that he admired Watmore, while noting the forward had other suitors and they would have to wait and see. In November, the winger trained with Stockport County to maintain fitness.
In May, Watmore reflected warmly on his spell at Millwall, highlighting family ties and praising the club’s leadership, and he wished them well for a play-off push.
Ekwah, 24, has joined Watford on loan from AS Saint-Etienne. His time in France has been turbulent since making an initial loan permanent last year, and he reportedly grew unhappy after their relegation to Ligue 2. He is said to have refused to play and had not made a senior appearance this season.
A Chelsea and West Ham academy product, the Frenchman will look to restart at Vicarage Road. Watford are four points off the Championship play-offs.
