Exclusive: Ray Parlour Shares Thoughts on €65m Summer Signing

It has been a magnificent start to the season for Arsenal, currently sitting two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

But, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for all involved. Despite the success of the team, one Arsenal star has faced some question marks since his arrival in the summer.

That would be Viktor Gyokeres, who joined the Gunners in a €65m move, and has cut a frustrated figure at times this season.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on the striker…

Parlour Backs Gyokeres for Success

The Swedish forward scored his fifth goal of the season with a penalty in the 1-0 win at Everton on Saturday. But many are still questioning his tactical fit in open play for Mikel Arteta’s side, but Parlour still feels confident on the 27-year-old.

“It’s always tough coming into a new league and a new team as a striker,” began Parlour, “Even with Henry and Bergkamp, they took 10-15 games to get going and we all know how that went!”

“Gyokeres already has a few goals, has come close a few times and his movement is only getting better,” continued Parlour, “The injury didn’t help, but now that he is back to full fitness, hopefully he can kick on.”

“He looks confident and Arsenal need to play to his strengths, but at the same time, he is bringing the best out of the players around him too,” said Parlour.

Looking Ahead

With Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both returning from their long-term injuries, there is more competition than ever for that number nine spot. Mikel Merino’s impressive performances in that position recently also hasn’t helped Gyokeres’ case.

However, with Man City closing in at the top of the table, now is the time to prove his worth for Gyokeres.

“It’s such a long season and we’re in a great position in all competitions, so I’m sure that he will score a lot of crucial goals,” finished Parlour.
