Barça Universal can exclusively report that Aymeric Laporte is one of the centre-backs most appreciated by Hansi Flick.
It must be remembered that while signing a striker remains Barcelona’s priority this summer, the club has not ruled out adding an experienced defender should the market present a favourable opportunity.
It is in this regard that the Spanish defender has appeared within the discussion at Spotify Camp Nou.
At this stage, however, the Athletic Club veteran is viewed more as a contingency option than an immediate transfer objective.
As such, Barcelona believe Laporte possesses many qualities that Flick wants in an experienced central defender.
The Spain international has once again demonstrated his pedigree during the FIFA World Cup, forming an impressive partnership with Pau Cubarsi at the heart of Spain’s defence.
Beyond their understanding on the pitch, the pair also share a strong relationship away from football, something that has not gone unnoticed within the club.
From Barcelona’s perspective, Laporte would offer a profile similar to Inigo Martinez – an experienced, left-footed defender capable of bringing composure, leadership and balance to a young defensive unit.
Despite Flick’s admiration, Barcelona are realistic about the obstacles involved.
The club regard any negotiations with Athletic Club as particularly difficult because Laporte is considered an important player in Bilbao and is not viewed as someone Athletic are prepared to part with easily.

Furthermore, his contractual situation also complicates matters. Having signed until 2028, Athletic are under no immediate pressure to negotiate.
Barcelona are therefore reluctant to commit significant resources to an operation they currently believe would be extremely difficult to complete.
For now, Barcelona’s transfer strategy continues to revolve around strengthening the attack, with the club focused on the need to bring in a proven goalscorer.
That, however, does not mean work on defensive targets has stopped.
The recruitment department continues to monitor the centre-back market in case circumstances change later in the window or an unexpected opportunity arises.
