Milan Van Ewijk could offer Coventry City a big boost if he is to stay with the Sky Blues - Don Goodman has his say
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes the "sensational" Milan Van Ewijk could offer Coventry City a big boost if he's to stay put despite transfer interest in the full-back.
Coventry right-back, Van Ewijk, has raised eyebrows over the course of his time with the Sky Blues and has since attracted plenty of interest this summer transfer window.
The Dutchman has been linked with a move away from CV6, with Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers being keen for his signature, as well as Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg.
However, with Coventry setting their asking price at £15m for the 24-year-old, it is now looking likely that the full-back may just stay at the club to the Sky Blues fans' delight.
Having got off to a quick start this campaign, Coventry are sitting pretty in the play-off spot after two games and have Van Ewijk high performance levels to thank for.
After notching two assists in their eight-goal thriller and coming out on top against Derby County, this highlighted the Dutchman's importance to the Sky Blues over the past two seasons and would surely make fans want to see him stick around.
After arriving from Dutch side Heerenveen in 2023, Van Ewijk has since cemented his place in Coventry's side by being one of the first names on Frank Lampard's teamsheet. The 24-year-old has made 89 league appearances the past two seasons and has already sought to impress going into his third Championship season.
The arrival of Kaine Kesler-Hayden drew question marks about his time at the club potentially coming to an end. However, with consistently good performances, it would be difficult to say goodbye to his services, and it looks like Van Ewijk is there to stay.
Sky Sports pundit, Don Goodman said: "I think everybody assumed once Kaine Kesler-Hayden arrived in the building at Coventry City that it was a done deal somewhere for Milan Van Ewijk, that he'd be off to pastures new, but it hasn't worked out that way as yet."
He went on to say: "If Coventry can keep him, I'm pretty confident they'd try. I know they probably feel like they need a left-back, and Kaine Kesler-Hayden, I think, is versatile. I think occasionally he's played on that side of the pitch, so that might be an option."
Having picked up two assists on Saturday, this backed up Van Ewijk's case of being one of the best full-backs in the second tier, and it's no surprise that top-flight clubs in this country and overseas have shown a key interest in signing the Dutchman.
With Van Ewijk's Coventry City contract set to expire in the summer of 2027, there may be no need for the Sky Blues to sell their star man so soon and could prove to be a vital player in their quest to return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
Goodman said: "Of course there's still time, but he's a sensational full-back at Championship level, one of the very, very best in the Championship, both attacking and defending.
"But in terms of Milan Van Ewijk, he'd be a really important player, and you'd have a player hungry to make up for what happened at the end of last season in the play-offs, where I know that he felt great personal responsibility for the mistake he made that cost his club in the first-leg of the play-off semi-final."
