Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Kevin Nagle's public backing of Lee Grant as Huddersfield mansger
Don Goodman believes it is right that Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle has backed Lee Grant amid a mixed start to life as manager.
Grant was appointed to his first role as the head coach in the summer, taking over the Terriers after moving from his job of first-team coach at Ipswich Town, with the aim of earning promotion back to the Championship.
The Yorkshire outfit had a difficult first year back in League One after suffering relegation in 2024, finishing 10th in the table and well adrift of a play-off place after a turbulent campaign.
Huddersfield have won two of their last six matches in the league, which has seen them fall six points behind leaders Stevenage in these early stages of the campaign.
However, they are still firmly in contention for at least a top six finish, with only 11 games played across the division, and with the quality of their squad on paper, they remain one of the favourites to return to the Championship.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman is pleased to see Grant being backed by Nagle, who posted on social media earlier this week that rumours of the manager’s dismissal are not true.
Goodman has urged patience from Huddersfield supporters, suggesting that the 42-year-old will need time to figure things out as he is still learning on the job how to be a head coach.
“After a fairly fast start, obviously the last few results — two wins in their last five, two losses — have just put Huddersfield on the back foot a little bit,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“But I do think it’s right that the owner backs Lee Grant.
“It’s 11 games in, they are sixth in the table, competing against some very good teams.
“I can understand the negative reaction to the weekend because they were a little bit passive against Stockport County, who are a very, very good team in their own right.
“But it’s a learning curve for Lee Grant, and I’m pleased to hear he’s got the full support of the owner.
“You hope the fans can be a little bit patient and that their patience will be rewarded because there’s a lot of potential within that squad to have a really good season.”
Huddersfield are currently sixth in the League One table 11 games into the new season, with the team earning 19 points from a possible 33.
Recent defeats to Stockport County and Bradford City have seen them lose ground in the race for an automatic promotion place, with the latter of those two sides now occupying a place inside the top two.
Grant’s side have won six of their first 11 games, losing four and drawing one, leaving them still in a play-off position.
Next up for Huddersfield is at home to Bolton Wanderers on October 16 in an 8pm kick-off.
Grant has made a decent start to life as manager at Huddersfield, and the club are still only six points off League One's top spot despite some difficult form in recent weeks.
The manager is taking on his first attempt at this role, so it’s only natural that there will be some hard lessons learned in the first few months.
But there have been enough encouraging signs to suggest that he has potential to be a success with the Terriers.
It would be far too rash to have his future in doubt already, and is the kind of move that could really backfire on Huddersfield if they were to end his tenure so soon.
However, the footballing landscape can change rapidly, and there's every chance that if results do not improve on a consistent basis, that Nagle may eventually look to a different figure in the dugout - that won't be in the immediate future though based on his backing.
