Real Madrid fans are eagerly awaiting their first season in charge of the club. It's the first season for Xabi Alonso, and it's expected to be a season filled with significant responsibilities and pressure for the Spanish coach. The responsibility will certainly not be light for Alonso.
To learn more and hear from media experts, Footafrica asked Egyptian journalist Hanan Ismail, who previously worked for Al-Watan News, for her opinion on some technical matters related to Xabi Alonso's team for the 2025-26 season.
Q: Regarding the Club World Cup, which was Xabi Alonso's first tournament as Real Madrid's coach, were there any positive aspects to build on? And what are the main issues that need addressing?
A: Alonso tried to implement a clear playing identity based on high pressing, quick transitions, and counterattacks, which is a positive step that helps in building attacking play. However, abandoning the five-man defensive line left large gaps, exposing the team defensively. This, combined with injuries, led to instability at the back—something that was evident in the match against PSG.
Q: With the arrivals of Arnold and Den Haasen, do you think the defensive unit still needs more signings, or will Alonso be able to build a solid system with the current players?
Journalist Hanan Ismail
A: Haasen and Arnold are good additions, but they still need time to fully integrate into the team. Arnold will be a great asset in attack due to his excellent build-up play from the back, while Haasen reads the game well but lacks experience in high-pressure matches. This is why we still need a top-tier, experienced defender who can lead the backline in crucial games.
Q: Kylian Mbappé had an outstanding individual season—do you think he can replicate that next season? And which players do you expect to step up compared to last campaign?
A: Mbappé is one of the best players in the world, with the mentality and talent to have an even better season than last. His role and Alonso’s instructions will play a big part in that.
As for other players, I believe Endrick could shine if given enough minutes—I’m confident he’ll make a big impact this season.
