The Royals have endured a challenging introduction to the 2025/26 League One campaign, losing each of their opening three matches under Noel Hunt ahead of this evening's visit to promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers.

A real absence of goals has emerged at the Select Car Leasing Stadium following the sale of last season's top scorer, Harvey Knibbs, to Charlton Athletic, with the versatile attacker having struck on 14 occasions in the previous term.

Indeed, Lewis Wing's late long-range strike in the 2-1 home defeat to newly-promoted AFC Wimbledon over the weekend represents Reading's only league goal after three matches, and it should come as no real surprise to see the Royals searching for added firepower in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

FLW has been exclusively informed that Reading are plotting a move for Marriott ahead of the September 1 deadline in a bid to inject fresh goalscoring pedigree and experience into Hunt's attacking line.

It is understood that Reading have identified the former Peterborough United and Derby County forward as a number one target in their ongoing search for a striker.

30-year-old Marriott appears to be surplus to requirements at Wrexham following the Red Dragon's third successive promotion to the Championship, having first joined the ambitious Welsh side from Fleetwood Town when they were competing in League Two back in the 2023/24 season.

Marriott has endured a difficult time infront of goal at the SToK Cae Ras, though, only returning seven strikes from 48 appearances. He found the back of the net on six occasions in just nine league starts last season, but is yet to feature for Phil Parkinson's side in the Championship this time around and could be on his way out in the coming days and weeks.

Wrexham AFC's Jack Marriott could be a shrewd signing for Reading

Although the addition of Marriott would perhaps fall short of setting pulses racing in Berkshire, he would offer much-needed experience and nous in the final third to an attack which has flattered to deceive thus far.

Marriott has previously been prolific at League One level with Petebrorough, where he truly made his name, and his goals to minutes ratio last term for Wrexham shows that he could rediscover his spark with added responsibility and more opportunities.

It's the sort of signing which is unlikely to break the bank, and Reading could do considerably worse given just how poorly they have started the new campaign.
