Expert says Chelsea have only one option in problem position after double disaster

Goalkeepers are back in the spotlight at Chelsea.

Robert Sanchez got a silly red card a week ago and was banned in midweek for our game against Lincoln. Second choice stopper Filip Jorgensen came in and looked even shakier than usual. The situation has once again got so bad that the Athletic have done a whole piece about it.

Their writer talked to goalkeeping expert Matt Pyzdrowski about what he would do next as the Blues struggle. After looking at Jorgensen’s flappy display against Lincoln in the cup, Pyzdrowski had only one conclusion.

The Blues need to play Sanchez, and to make him feel like there’s faith in him:

“Sanchez needs the backing: ‘You’re our guy, regardless of what happens. Go out and play your game.’

“He’s very much a Premier League starting goalkeeper. You can question whether or not he’s good enough for Chelsea, and that’s a question that Chelsea are going to have to answer themselves,” Pyzdrowski added.

Chelsea’s best plan is to get Sanchez playing well – then replace him

We have to agree – we can’t sign a goalkeeper until January anyway, and likely won’t be able to make a major improvement in the summer. Until then, we just have to put up with it.

One thing we can all agree on is that right now Sanchez is a better option than Jorgensen, and we’re better off backing him fully until there’s a chance to get someone better in. Going back and forth between two options doesn’t help either of them, nor does it help the defence trying to play ahead of them.

Of course it’s ridiculous we’re in a situation where we’re still playing Sanchez and pretending he’s good enough – but until there’s a chance to replace him, it’s all we can do.
