Manchester City face a significant challenge in their efforts to extend Rodri’s contract amid transfer interest from Real Madrid this summer, as per reports.
Rodri is entering the final year of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium this summer and has indicated he will not address his future until after the FIFA World Cup – a stance that has left Manchester City in a delicate position as director of football Hugo Viana attempts to navigate one of the most consequential summers in the club’s recent history.
Real Madrid remain firmly in the background – with the club’s presidential candidates having publicly outlined their desire to sign the 29-year-old – while Jose Mourinho‘s incoming role as Los Blancos manager has only added further noise around a situation that City will be desperate to resolve before it reaches the point of no return.
“I understand” – Rodri issues fresh update on Manchester City future
According to Fabrizio Romano, Rodri is seeking a more lucrative contract offer from Manchester City than what has currently been proposed by the club, with the midfielder’s representatives understood to be pushing for terms that better reflect his status as the finest holding midfielder in world football.
The update adds significant weight to the sense that City’s contract talks with Rodri are not as straightforward as the club had hoped.
While there has long been a belief inside the Etihad Stadium that Rodri would ultimately sign a new deal, Romano’s report suggests the gap between the player’s expectations and City’s current position is a meaningful one – and not simply a procedural delay.
Rodri’s situation is the single most important contractual matter facing Viana this summer. Allowing the Spaniard to enter the final twelve months of his deal without resolution would hand Real Madrid a window of opportunity that City cannot afford to leave open, particularly with Enzo Maresca attempting to build a new era at the Etihad Stadium from the ground up.
The 29-year-old spent the majority of last season on the sidelines through injury before returning in the final weeks of the campaign, during which Pep Guardiola consistently pushed back on the narrative that City could not function without him while simultaneously making clear his central importance to the squad.
The reality is that Rodri, when fit, remains irreplaceable – and every club in world football knows it. With the World Cup now underway and a resolution not expected before its conclusion, Viana will need patience and the right financial package to convince a player who, by Romano’s account, currently believes City have not yet offered him enough.
