FC Barcelona started the summer in tremendous fashion, getting the likes of Raphinha and Hansi Flick to sign new contracts at the club. This was followed by agreeing a renewal with arguably the biggest talent in world football at the moment – Lamine Yamal.

Since then, the club made a swift move in the transfer market, securing the signing of Joan Garcia from local rivals Espanyol. Barcelona also managed to snap up Swedish talent Roony Bardghji on an absolute bargain, due to his contractual situation.

Now, as per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are planning to advance in talks to agree a new contract with club captain Frenkie de Jong. It has been mentioned that both sides are keen on signing a new deal as soon as possible.

Frenkie wants to continue at Barcelona

The Dutch midfield maestro will be entering the final year of his contract this season, but he continues to be indispensable to Hansi Flick. The 28-year-old enjoyed his best season in a Barcelona jersey last time around, despite being available only for half of it.

It emerged yesterday that super agent Pini Zahavi had taken over as the new agent of the club captain, with Frenkie facing issues with his former agent. Quite obviously, the player is trying to do all it takes to sign a new deal.

Having gone through half a year of injury horror, Frenkie returned midway last season. However, it was only since January that he really started showcasing his quality, and sooner rather than later, he displaced Marc Casado from the starting XI.

Defensive improvement

While Frenkie has always been very good on the ball, last season, he showed massive improvement in terms of his work off the ball. The 28-year-old showed much better defensive acumen and grew into his role as the holding midfielder.

Securing the new deal for the club captain would be a huge coup for Hansi Flick. With time, the player is likely to become even more important to the team, and only time will tell how it plays out.
