Bayern Munich and Chelsea ended up having summers which were closely linked.
The German giants were linked with a number of Blues players throughout the window – Christopher Nkunku (who ended up at Milan) Renato Veiga (who ended up at Villareal) and Tyrique George (who ended up staying at Chelsea) were all named as potential Bayern signings.
In the end, the player they did end up with was Nicolas Jackson.
Nicolas Jackson holds up a Bayern shirt ahead of his move.
It’s a loan deal with an obligation to buy, and the comments from Jackson and his camp made it seem like there was no chance he was coming back to Chelsea.
” I have very strong emotions, but not for the reasons you might think, Jackson is quoted as saying by Bayern insider Christian Falk.
“I was a bit sad to leave Chelsea, my teammates, and the fans.”
He’s talking like a player who is already gone, not one who is on loan.
But what Bayern chief Uli Hoeness said this week turned that on its head: “there will definitely not be a permanent contract. That only happens if he plays 40 games from the start. He will never do that.”
So it seems like he could be on his way back to Stamford Bridge next summer, hopefully having raised his value a little with a hatful of Bundesliga goals. Given his definitive comments about leaving, it does leave things open to an awkward reunion.
Still Bayern could buy him without using the clause anyway – “who’s to say a series of consistently strong performances as [Harry Kane’s] backup couldn’t encourage the chiefs at Säbener Straße to engage in exploratory talks next summer?,” Falk speculated.
Far from being over, this seems like a saga which is only just beginning.
