'Fans are underestimating': Arne Slot is right for all the wrong reasons

Arne Slot is absolutely right with his latest comments. But not for the reasons he thought.

Arne Slot faced questions after Liverpool’s 19th defeat of the season. Aston Villa defeated them 4-2 - a result that just about flattered the Reds - and the pressure is at an unbelievably high point.

His general answer? Have faith. Things can change quickly.

“I can understand at this moment in time they don’t have confidence that things can be much better next season,” he said.

“But I think they are underestimating what a transfer window can do, what a new start can do. I think we know quite well what we have to improve."

Now, Slot is correct. A transfer window can do a lot and change things dramatically.

However, he’s wrong to suggest that fans underestimate that and he’s wrong to suggest that the effect is positive. Because Liverpool fans just witnessed a transfer window where things moved quite significantly in the wrong direction.

The Reds spent an awful lot of money in 2025 to improve on a title-winning squad. They also moved on several players for over £200m. The result was a worse squad - one that, as Slot says, needs a lot of work to become functional.

So yes, he’s right. A transfer window can change everything and making poor decisions during one can set you back quite some way.

And that’s why Liverpool fans are chasing a change. Because they’ve seen what a transfer window under the current setup can do and there isn’t actually any faith that things will improve on the back of the 2026 summer window.

Instead, the faith is in a change of head coach - someone who might be able to improve the players purchased last time out. The current one is failing to get the best out of them, after all.

Arne Slot: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 16 May 2026, Arne Slot is facing intense pressure following a "damaging" 4–2 defeat at Aston Villa last night. This marks Liverpool's 12th Premier League loss of a difficult campaign, leaving their Champions League qualification resting on a must-win final match against Brentford next Sunday. The Reds have now conceded 52 league goals—with a league-high 20 coming from set-pieces—triggering widespread audible frustration from supporters.

Future and Transfer News

Despite the growing backlash, Slot stated on 14 May that he has "every reason to believe" he will remain in charge for the 2026/27 season, pointing to his remaining contract and internal discussions. He urged fans not to underestimate what a "new start" and an active summer transfer window can achieve. Slot is set to oversee a massive squad refresh, which includes navigating a pre-agreed early contract termination for Mohamed Salah.
