Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to France sparked fresh anger online over the continued omission of ex-Corinthians centre-back Murillo, now at Nottingham Forest.

In Boston, the Seleção played much of the second half with a man advantage but struggled in attack. Murillo has told TNT Sports that one poor game does not define him, adding that he believes there will be more chances and that he will be better prepared for the next World Cup cycle.

Brazil’s defence was depleted. Gabriel Magalhães felt knee pain after the English League Cup on Sunday and did not travel, while Marquinhos withdrew pre-match with a hip issue. Carlo Ancelotti started Léo Pereira and Bremer, with Ibañez and Danilo, a full-back who can cover centrally, among the substitutes.

Ancelotti initially chose not to replace Gabriel. Hours after the defeat he called up Girona defender Vitor Reis, a move that intensified calls from fans who felt Murillo should have been selected. Social media brimmed with frustration, sarcasm and pleas for his inclusion.

Despite Forest’s uneven Premier League campaign, Murillo has stood out in 2026 with 2001 minutes, averaging 4.3 recoveries and 5.3 clearances per game. He has two Brazil call-ups, in 2024 and 2025 under Dorival Júnior, the latter ending in a 4-1 defeat by Argentina.

He has not been called since March 2025. Brazil face Croatia on Tuesday at 21:00 Brasília time, then Panama and Egypt in May and June, this time with the 26 players set for the 2026 World Cup squad.
