Sunderland supporters have picked a dream European squad, with the UEFA Europa League draw on Friday, August 28 to confirm eight league-phase opponents.
According to Sunderland Echo, fans on the Wearside Echoes nostalgia page were asked to select Black Cats from any era for a Europa League campaign.
In goal, Jimmy Montgomery drew the most nominations. His 1973 FA Cup Final double save is legendary, and there were mentions too for Robin Roefs and Shay Given.
Colin Todd claimed a defensive place after 173 appearances for Sunderland, 293 for Derby and 27 for England.
Charlie Hurley, known as The King, was another standout choice, revered for 402 Sunderland appearances between 1957 and 1969.
Dave Watson, remembered for a bullet header against Luton in the 1973 FA Cup run, also featured. The centre half, once a centre forward, played 177 times for Sunderland and 65 for England.
