Chelsea take on Bayern Munich tonight in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena, and that’s leading to a whole slew of reminiscing about the 2012 final, where Chelsea went to Bayern’s stadium and won the trophy from under their noses.
Chelsea’s 2020 team to face Bayern.
But there’s another, more recent Bayern memory to consider.
In one of the final games before the initial Coronavirus lockdowns, the Blues were battered by Bayern. They had to wait until August for the return game in the Allianz. This was the post-transfer ban, Frank Lampard team.
Users on social media have posted the team sheet for that game in a mocking day, to compare with our team now and say “we’ve come a long way!”
That feels a little disrespectful. Reece James is still world class, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger would get in the team now, N’Golo Kante is one of our best players ever, Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi would all be handy squad players at worst right now, and Mateo Kovacic still starts for Man City when fit.
And let’s not forget, the bulk of these guys were in the team the following season when we actually won the competition.
We can all celebrate the talent we’ve got in our squad now, and there are certainly some upgrades. But let’s not disrespect our history by pretending that these guys were all bad.
We have no doubt that in 5 years people will be doing similar things with our teamsheet for tonight. They just haven’t been around long enough for fans to get frustrated with them.
Memories are short in football, and the shiny new toy syndrome which infects so many fans will always make a team of new signings seem more appealing than a team of the past.
