Bayern wanted to keep their unbeaten-streak going - but Arsenal were just too good on the night and finally beat the team that looked unbeatable up to this point. Kompany was outcoached for the first time this season and his team was not able to match the high expectations put in them tonight.
Here are our player ratings for the Bayern players in the clash against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League:
GK: Manuel Neuer - 5/10
Sporting a glorious moustache, Neuer stayed alert throughout Arsenal’s counterattacks. He handled most situations confidently, though during Arsenal’s first corner he looked a bit caught in between decisions - either staying on his line or committing fully would’ve served him better. Great reactions in the second half in multiple situations, though. However, there was no need to be so high up the pitch before Arsenal's third goal.
RB: Josip Stanišić - 5/10
Rode Bayern’s momentum after the opening goal and nearly earned Bayern the lead himself. Still, in that moment he could’ve been more aware of Kane and Karl, who both were in stronger positions to finish. Was often cought on the wrong foot, but played it off better than his colleagues on the other side of the pitch.
CB: Jonathan Tah - 5/10
Tah played it safe for most of the first half, choosing the simple pass rather than risking turnovers. His biggest moment came in stoppage time, when he made a crucial intervention to snuff out an Arsenal counter. However, he was also not able to be a calming factor in Bayern's defense - especially from Arsenal's set pieces.
CB: Dayot Upamecano - 3/10
Arsenal’s high press clearly affected Upamecano, forcing him into a few unnecessary small mistakes as he struggled to play out cleanly from the back. A misplaced pass led to Bayern conceding the second goal - not the best performance from the Frenchman, who did not take a foot wrong in this season so far. Ultimately taken off for Minjae Kim.
LB: Konrad Laimer - 4/10
From the unusual left-back role, Laimer brought his trademark aggression and fight. But with Arsenal’s frontline applying constant pressure, he rarely found opportunities to push forward. Going back, Laimer made some unusal mistakes in the positional play. Not the best of nights for the Austrian.
CDM: Joshua Kimmich - 6/10
In contrast to some teammates, Kimmich remained mostly composed in Bayern’s back line. His highlight was a gorgeous long ball to Gnabry, which directly sparked the move for Bayern’s goal. Kimmich continued to use this method of long balls quite successfully, but his teammates were not able to make use of them. Was caught off guard before Arsenal's third goal.
CDM: Aleksandar Pavlović - 5/10
Pavlović, too, felt the weight of Arsenal’s relentless press. It limited him significantly, preventing him from dictating play in the deep-lying role where he usually thrives.
RM: Michael Olise - 3/10
The French superstar was a clear pressing target for all Arsenal players - there was no moment in which Olise could have a moment to think when near the ball. He started to get into better positions when he swapped sides with Karl&Gnabry. Ultimately, Arsenal were able to completely take him out of the game.
CAM: Lennart Karl - 7/10
Karl’s quick dribbling helped Bayern break Arsenal’s press in tight situations. A real talent - he positioned himself perfectly for his chance and buried his very first shot of the match. He's now the only player to have scored against Arsenal in this Champions League campaign so far.
LM: Serge Gnabry - 5/10
Gnabry was pretty invisible early on, but he burst into life with a sharp run onto Kimmich’s long ball, immediately laying it off to Karl for Bayern's first half goal. Later, he almost caused trouble by giving Saka a penalty chance, but recovered brilliantly. Couldn't cause much trouble in the second half, as Arsenal were even more compact.
ST: Harry Kane - 3/10
With Arsenal dominating the first 30 minutes, Kane often dropped deep into midfield to get involved and help initiate Bayern’s attacks, trying to pull his team forward. Could not impact the game in the way he usually does - Arsenal were able to completely shut him off for most of the game. Since there were very high expectations for him and Olise to have an impact on the game, their ratings are a bit more harsh - that's the curse of being one of the best footballers in the world.
