Federico Valverde and Darwin Nunez have been named in Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay squad for the World Cup, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.
According to L'Équipe, Bielsa waited until the penultimate day to publish the 26-man list, though the players had already been assembling at Uruguay’s base.
Bielsa has also included his best player Federico Valverde, despite a recent head trauma following an altercation with Real Madrid team-mate Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Darwin Nunez is selected even though he has not featured in Saudi Arabia since 2 February, having been removed from Al-Hilal’s list when Karim Benzema arrived. He was in the squad for Uruguay’s March friendlies.
The most notable omission is Nahitan Nandez of Al-Qadisiyah, left out for technical reasons despite regular minutes in Saudi Arabia. Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, 39, has been recalled.
The fitness of Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Joaquin Piquerez and Matias Vina remains uncertain, and late adjustments to the squad could still be made.
