Bruno Fernandes broke the Premier League single-season assist record and also found the net himself as Manchester United rounded off their campaign with a 3-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

The United captain set up the opener to take his tally to 21 assists, moving clear of the previous benchmark held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Patrick Dorgu was the beneficiary, rising highest from Fernandes’ corner to head home after half an hour.

Brighton had started brightly enough, with Diego Gómez and Maxim De Cuyper both going close in the early stages, but they struggled to make their pressure count. Their wastefulness was punished when United doubled their lead through Bryan Mbeumo, who finished off a slick move involving Amad Diallo and Mason Mount.

Fernandes then capped a dominant personal display by adding a third just after the restart, drilling a composed finish to put the result beyond doubt.

Brighton briefly threatened a response but lacked cutting edge in the final third, with Senne Lammens largely untroubled. The defeat saw the Seagulls slip to eighth place, though they still secured European football in the Conference League.

For United, it was another strong performance under Michael Carrick, whose side controlled much of the contest and continued their impressive late-season form, with Fernandes once again at the heart of everything.
