According to Coluna Do Fla, Fernando Diniz stepped in to prevent former Flamengo goalkeeper Hugo Souza from being drawn into a post-match flashpoint after Corinthians drew 1-1 away to Santa Fe in Colombia in the Copa Libertadores during the fourth round.
Centre-back Gustavo Henrique, another ex-Flamengo player, equalised in stoppage time, and Hugo Souza’s celebration of the goal angered Santa Fe’s players.
Seeing tempers flare, Diniz moved towards the goalkeeper and escorted him to the dressing room, avoiding a confrontation after the final whistle.
Elsewhere, Flamengo’s match also saw disorder in the stands. Independiente Medellín fans set fires, smashed seats and hurled objects on to the pitch, so the referee cancelled the game.
Flamengo stayed in the dressing room awaiting Conmebol’s authorisation to leave, after the governing body cited a lack of security at the stadium. Conmebol is expected to award the three points to Flamengo and to issue an official statement in the coming days.
