The Owls have been handed an automatic 12-point deduction by the EFL, as per their rules, due to this latest development behind the scenes.

Financial issues have proven a major issue this year, which has led to owner Dejphon Chansiri coming under fire from supporters.

The fans have protested his ownership of the Championship side throughout the start of the current season, with the Thai businessman being urged to sell his stake in the club.

Wages have gone unpaid on time on multiple occasions this year, which has also led to the departures of key figures in the team, such as Michael Smith and Josh Windass, which caused further frustration from supporters.

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the appointment of administrators from Begbies Traynor, with the Owls claiming talks have been held in recent weeks over the sale of the club.

Supporters will now be hoping for a swift resolution, with the beginning of the end of Chansiri’s time in charge seemingly on the horizon.

“Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor have been appointed joint administrators of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club Limited and of Sheffield 3 Limited, the company that owns the club’s stadium, on 24 October 2025,” wrote the club, via their official Instagram page.

“The administrators were appointed following significant efforts to agree a sale to a credible future custodian in recent weeks which unfortunately could not be concluded and amid rising pressure from creditors.”

Forestieri replied in the comments with a smiling face with heart-eyes emoji at the news, highlighting the strong desire from people to see a change in ownership at Hillsborough.

The forward spent five years with Sheffield Wednesday before departing as a free agent in 2020 after failing to agree terms on a new contract.

The Argentine was a popular figure during his time with the Yorkshire outfit, with his goals during the 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaign in particular earning the favour of supporters, as they earned a play-off place on both occasions.

Sheffield Wednesday are now bottom of the current Championship table, with their 12-point deduction only widening that gap to 23rd.

Dejphon Chansiri’s time as Sheffield Wednesday owner is coming to an end

It’s difficult to foresee how Chansiri holds onto Sheffield Wednesday now, it will just be a matter of finding a buyer willing to pay off the club’s debts.

Administrators coming in is always a terrible sign for a team, but it is now the quickest route to turning things around at Hillsborough under new ownership.

Chansiri was reportedly holding out for £100 million, which was an outrageous sum to still be seeking even as things got worse and worse behind the scenes at Sheffield Wednesday.

That asking price will now be drastically diminished, which should open a clear path to a potential buyer like John Textor or Mike Ashley, or someone else entirely.
