FIFA opens cases against Argentina over Falklands banner, Paredes, Ayala after World Cup | OneFootball

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association after players displayed a political banner about the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 semi-final win over England.

After the victory in Atlanta, several of Lionel Scaloni's players held up a banner stating the Falkland Islands are Argentine. FIFA said using a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations could breach its disciplinary code.

Possible breaches have been cited, including the use of an event as a platform for non-sporting messages. In 2014, Argentina were fined about €23,000 for a similar banner before a friendly against Slovenia.

Separately, following the 0-1 defeat to Spain after extra time in the World Cup final, multiple Argentina players and staff are subject to disciplinary cases.

Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina each face three counts of assault. Thiago Almada and Roberto Ayala are accused of unsporting conduct, while Spain's Gavi could also face sanction on the same basis.
